Mycophenolate is an immune-system suppressive for the prophylaxis of transplantation rejections, primarily kidney, heart or liver transplants. Mycophenolate is converted into mycophenolic acid after ingestion, which has the effect of inhibiting the IMPDH enzyme (inosinmonophosphate-dehydrogenase), and as a consequence also inhibiting the synthesis of Guanosine . This then disturbs the synthesis and proliferation of the B- and T-lymphocytes and their volume declines in the body, thus also suppressing the immune system. Frequent side effects are diarrhoea, constipation or vomiting, and the suppression of the immune system can involve an increase in infections. The ingestion of mycophenolate during pregnancy can lead to fetal malformations.
