Mycoplasma pneumoniae is a common cause of community-acquired pneumonia ("atypic pneumonia") and can also lead to other respiratory conditions such as bronchitis, tracheobronchitis and otitis. Symptoms of Mycoplasma pneumoniae infection include cough, fever, sore throat, headache, and fatigue.
The bacteria is unique in that it lacks a cell wall, making it resistant to certain antibiotics that target cell wall synthesis. Treatment typically involves the use of antibiotics that are effective against this type of bacteria, such as macrolides or tetracyclines.
