Clinical information

Enterobius vermicularis is a parasitic worm, commonly known as the pinworm. Pinworms are small, white, thread-like worms that infect the human gastrointestinal tract, particularly the large intestine and rectum. They are one of the most common intestinal parasites in humans, especially in children.
Pinworm infections are highly contagious and can spread easily from person to person through the ingestion of pinworm eggs. The eggs are typically ingested by touching contaminated surfaces or objects and then touching the mouth or food. Once inside the body, the eggs hatch in the small intestine, and the larvae migrate to the large intestine where they mature into adult worms.

Symptoms of pinworm infection may include itching around the anus or vagina, especially at night, restlessness, irritability, disturbed sleep, and occasionally mild abdominal pain. Diagnosis is usually made by identifying the presence of pinworm eggs in stool samples or by swabing the perianal area (skin around the anus).

Treatment for pinworm infection typically involves the use of anthelmintic medications, which kill the worms. Additionally, practicing good hygiene, such as regular handwashing, keeping nails short, and washing bedding and clothing, is important to prevent reinfection and the spread of pinworms to others.
