Clinical information

Glutathione S-transferases (GSTs) are a group of enzymes that play an important role in the metabolism and detoxification of cells. They belong to the transferase family and are present in many organisms, including humans.
GSTs catalyse a chemical reaction between the tripeptide glutathione (GSH) and certain substrates intended for degradation and elimination from the organism. These substrates can be toxic compounds such as heavy metals, environmental toxins, drugs and also the body's own metabolic products.
The main function of GSTs is to protect cells from oxidative stress and damage caused by reactive oxygen species. They may also be involved in the regulation of cell growth, signal transduction and the inflammatory response.
Due to their important role in detoxification and cell protection, GSTs are intensively studied in medical research. They represent potential target molecules for the development of new therapies against cancer or also neurodegenerative diseases.
