Clinical information

An infection with human herpes virus 6 (HHV-6) is the cause of the common childhood illness exanthema subitum (also known as roseola infantum or sixth disease) which is usually self-limiting.
After the initial infection, the virus persists in the salivary glands. If the immune defence is weakened (e.g. immunosuppression in transplant patients), the virus can reactivate with fever, exanthema, pneumonia, encephalitis and myocarditis.
