Gliclazide belongs to the sulfonylurea family of medications. The active ingredient has anti-diabetic properties and the properties of lowering blood-sugar levels. It is only suitable for patients with non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus (type 2), where dietary measures and bodily activity didn’t prove beneficial. The effective mechanism is based on Gliclazide being an atrial potassium-channel blocker. It thus inhibits the potassium efflux of the pancreatic beta cells by depolarizing the cell membranes and opening the calcium channels. The resulting calcium injection into the cells stimulates enzymes to synthesize insulin.
